Mr. Mohana Perumal, the 36-year-old farmer from Salem had a successful heart transplant at Rela Hospital from a brain-dead patient in Madurai under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. For more than 18 months, the patient has waited on the right match for this organ transplant and after several attempts, the Heart and Lung Transplant Team at Rela Hospital found the match from a brain-dead patient from Rajaji Government hospital, Madurai. The surgery happened on 17th November 2022 for 6 hours and the Mr. Mohana Perumal was discharged on 2nd December 2022, handing over a sapling to Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO, of Rela hospital thankfully, requesting to plant the sapling, in memory of the organ donor.
The heart was harvested from a 27 years young man, who had a heavy injury in his head, in the wake of a road accident. Declaring brain dead, the family was counselled on which they finally agreed to the organ donation. The further procedures were carried out by the Tamil Nadu Organ registry.
Dr. Prem Anand John with a team of 6 doctors, was routed to Madurai, recovering his heart, and backed into Chennai Airport, transporting it to Rela Hospital within 80 minutes, with the help of green corridor and support of Chennai Traffic Law and Order Police.
