Young Chennai boxers Vishwanath Suresh officially tabulated a 5-0 score to clinch the gold medal at the International Boxing Association (IBA) Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022 held at La Nucia, Spain.
The other two Indians, Vanshaj and Devika Ghorpade also gave a tough game and bagged their gold medals by unanimous decisions.
Chennai’s Vishwanath handed India its first gold at the prestigious championships after thrashing Ronel Suyom of the Philippines without breaking a sweat in the men’s 48kg final. Earlier, Vanshaj also has the record of taking possession of a gold medal in the Youth Asian Championships, this year.

Bhawna Sharma against Uzbekistan’s Gulsevar Ganieva won a 0-5 score and bagged the silver medal in the opening match of the day. Ashish (54kg) from India also has come up with the silver medal, fighting 1-4 against Japanese pugilist Yuta Sakai in the men’s final.
Consequently, Devika from Pune added the second gold to India overpowering England’s Lauren Mackie in the women’s 52kg final.
The Asian Youth Champion Vanshaj then won the third gold. The confident Sonipat-based boxer made light work of Demur Kajaia from Georgia in the men’s 63.5kg summit clash.
India, led in the medal count, by bagging 11 medals at the event followed by Uzbekistan (10), Ireland (7), and Kazakhstan (7). Championship this year, had participants of over 600 boxers from 73 countries. The Indian women’s division also secured the highest by acquiring 8 medals.
Subsequently, after three gold medals, Ravina (63kg) and Kirti (81kg) will add up more gold in India’s kitty in the women’s final on the last day of the competition against Megan deCler of Netherlands and Ireland’s Elizabeth D’Arcy respectively.
In addition to the three gold and two silver medals on a penultimate day, India’s record also includes four bronze medals won by Tamanna (50kg), Kunjarani Devi Thongam (60kg), Muskan (75kg) and Lashu Yadav (70kg), who finished their campaigns in the semi-finals.
